Close to the Woodstove

Spent much of the rainy day close to the woodstove with the dogs. It was a gentle, steady rain that continued through the night. Hot tea and a warm fire in a still tidy house from the weekend. Mondays often arrive unaccompanied by a tidy house so I was especially grateful. It’s normally the day for righting the ship, which I do enjoy, but it was also nice not to have to do that.

With all the rain we’ve been having, potatoes are on my mind. We don’t normally dig potatoes until October but I think we might call it early because it is just so incredibly wet out there. I’m not sure I can expect them to hang on much longer. Just need it to dry out before the big dig, which is another point of concern. Will that ever happen?

We are having counters and a new sink installed tomorrow which requires some prep work on our part tonight. Some type of frame that Adam is building to provide extra support for the sink. Packing up everything on the counters. Removing our temporary counters. Hopefully all goes well because we are two very tired home renovators. Though I think mostly the exhaustion is from this particular round of renovations taking place in the central part of our home. It’s difficult to maintain normalcy when there is near-constant upheaval in your most used room. It’s been many years since I’ve done a word of the year (just kind of grew away from it), but I think for 2024 I’m claiming it wholeheartedly and early: Radical Rest. Can we do two words? Rest doesn’t feel like enough, I need my rest to be radical.

We’ll be without a kitchen sink for a couple of days so I filled water jugs for fresh drinking, made bread and a pan of white + dark chocolate + cranberry granola bars. The latter being something I thought the workers might enjoy tomorrow. As for us, a day or two of bread and cheese with some apples from the old tree on the eastern corner of the garden should keep the dirty dishes to a minimum. Such a menu will probably feel good to the soul, too.

  1. Ah! I LOVE that your blog doesn’t have any pop up ads or anything that takes away from it! That’s a big reason I get sick of trying to read a blog, you can never see the actual post for all the pop-ups. I’m Looking forward to reading your blog regularly ☺️.

    1. I love this return to blogging. Takes me back to checking in on my bookmarked favorite blogs to see what’s happening. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and beauty.

  2. I’m new in the community, but I enjoy what I read. Thanks for all of your calm. Is the recipe for this granola in H&H? I looked and couldn’t find it.

  3. Reading your blog has always given me such a sense of peace. I’m thrilled that you’ve decided to resume your writing for now. Hoping all went well with the counters.

  4. I hear you on early harvest of the taters this year. Just finished yesterday and they actually look great. There was no chance of them being dry this year so ‘m just taking the extra step of letting them air out a bit in the basement with a dehumidifier before putting them in containers to keep. Good luck!!!

  5. I love that for all the harvesting and food prep you do that you also keep it simple sometimes. Popcorn for a snack, munchies for dinner. I hope you get the radical rest you need. Maybe we should call it a movement for 2024. As manyy people as possible to claim that for themselves to the best of their ability. Maybe we could bring that as a gift to the world.
    Thanks for sharing these moments.

  6. My kids and I love the look of those granola bars! I’ll have to find a recipe and make some of my own. I’m so happy that you’re finally getting the countertops and that sink that you’ve been chasing for a while!
